Susan Elizabeth Davis Crooks of Buies Creek was born on September 15, 1950, the daughter of the late Major General Ferd L. Davis and Selma Ann Harris Davis. She died on April 25, 2018. She was married to John Thomas Crooks and they had two children, Susan Elizabeth (Beth) Crooks Milton (Jerry) and John (Bo) Thomas Crooks, Jr. (Shannon). They have four grandchildren: Jeremy and Lauren Milton; and Abigail and Grace Crooks. She was predeceased by her brother, Leary Davis, Jr., and by her sister, Dr. Ann Davis Matheny. She was survived by her brother John Zebulon Davis and wife, Janet Stevens Davis. She is also survived by her sister in-law, Joy Baker Davis, brother in-law Bob Matheny, brother in-law Mike Crooks; and many beloved cousins, nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces.
Susan grew up in Zebulon, NC, and began taking dance lessons when she was two and continued her love of dancing throughout her life. She attended Wakelon HS, where she developed life-long friends. Susan was an honor student, student council officer, a member of the National Honor Society, and head cheerleader. She was voted “Best All Around” by her classmates. Susan enjoyed competing in horse shows all over the state. During high school, Susan also was the female vocalist in the band, the Soul VI.
Susan attended Wake Forest University where she met her husband, John. She also attended the University of Salamanca in Spain, North Carolina State University and Rex Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated first in her class. Her primary area of practice as a nurse was Intensive Care Nursery. In 1987, she graduated first in her class from Campbell University School of Law. Upon graduation, she practiced law with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice (now Womble Bond and Dickinson), becoming a partner in 1995. Her medical knowledge was put to use in her defense of cases involving complex medical issues. She also provided pro bono legal services to Hospice of Wake and Harnett County.
Susan retired in 2013. She attended line dancing classes, played cards with her friends, enjoyed the beach, traveled extensively throughout Europe, joined the Garden Club, filled her yard with flowers, and became active in the Harnett County Democratic party. Susan was a devout Christian and a member of Memorial Baptist Church of Buies Creek.
Throughout her illness, Susan maintained a positive attitude and was filled with awe at the myriad of folks who stepped up to show their love for her. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory and honor may be made to: The Susan Davis Crooks and John Thomas Crooks Law Fund, Campbell University; the Memorial Baptist Church of Buies Creek, debt retirement; or the Harnett County Democratic Party.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Memorial Baptist Church in Buies Creek with Rev. Ed Beddingfield officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Susan is one of the most caring, giving, loving, smart people I know and the list could go on. My most heartfelt sympathies go to the family. and her friends. We have lost a wonderful person but God has gained an angel.
