W.S. Griffin



Mr. William Samuel “W.S.” Griffin, 91, of Mamers passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late Braxton Craven “B.C.” and Lillie Wallace Griffin. W.S. was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nadine Brown Griffin and a son, Chalmers Griffin of Sanford. He was also preceded in death by a special friend, Alva Lee Thomas of Lillington. After graduating from Benhaven High School in 1944, W.S. moved to Mobile, AL and wired ships during WWII. He moved back to N.C. to begin his truck driving career and retired after 39 years of service.

W.S. was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Captain of the Senior Citizens Group and a Sunday school teacher. W.S. enjoyed volunteering in the Mamers community. He committed all his extra time assisting the elderly and the Meals on Wheels program. W.S. helped in the Boone Trail School Cafeteria for many years and was an active member of the Boone Trail Ruritan Club. W.S. was well known for telling jokes and entertaining at church functions, parties and the Ronnie Womack show.

W.S. is survived by 2 sons, Al Griffin and J.D. Griffin both of Mamers; 3 grandchildren, Dawn Dean and husband Mike of Sanford, Krisy Griffin of Dunn and Al Griffin, Jr. of Mamers; 2 great-grandchildren, Braxton Dean and Haylee Brooke Smith; 1 great-great grandson, Blake Dean; 3 sisters, Meldred Stewart and husband Ed of Burlington, Dolores Wright of Greensboro and Vernie Pettus and husband Dave of Charlotte along with several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday June 17, 2017 at Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers with Rev. Dan Deaton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00-8:00 PM at O’Quinn-Peebles-Phillips Funeral Home and other times at the home.
